An Overview Of The Chemical Manufacturing Industry
http://es.epa.gov/techinfo/facts/chemical.html
"Chemical manufacturers produce a large variety of hazardous wastes that might be subject to Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) requirements covering the generation, transportation, and management of hazardous waste. Your business is included in the chemical manufacturers category if you manufacture:Industrial inorganic chemicals, Industrial organic chemicals, Pigments, Plastics, Pesticides, Synthetic rubber, Explosives, Synthetic fibers, Gum and wood chemicals."
Canadian petrochemicals industry - report from Strategis Canada
http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/SSG/bt01135e.html
"In the ten year period 1986-1995, Canadian petrochemical shipments have doubled and exports have more than tripled to reach $10.7 billion and $6.0 billion respectively. This compares to the apparent Canadian market of approximately $9.4 billion in 1995. These increases have been achieved with a modest increase in direct employment in the sector (13,380 jobs in 1986 and 15,166 in 1995) and were made possible by productivity increases resulting from both increased scale of operations and improved technology. The outlook for the year 2000 is for continued growth based upon internationally competitive facilities and the strong Canadian supply base of natural gas and oil."
Catalysis and Biocatalysis Technologies
http://www.atp.nist.gov/atp/97wp-cat.htm
"Chemical process innovation is a fundamental driver of the economic and environmental viability of the $375 B U.S. chemical industry. Chemical production processes are predominately based upon catalytic, and, increasingly, biocatalytic technologies. Catalytic process technologies are generally less capital intensive, have lower operating costs, and yield higher purity products with fewer by-products and reduced environmental hazards. Advancements in catalysis are a key spark in maintaining the impact of the chemical industry as a leading economic engine associated with contributions to a positive balance of trade. Following a two decade decline in the industry's traditional support for long-range research, current industry investment in catalysis and related process developments is spotty. Industrial firms are now seeking to leverage their catalytic process development efforts to bring new life and agility from basic research discoveries into the innovation pipeline."
